Is OpenRouter Worth It If You Don’t Write Code?

Short answer: the OpenRouter console is not worth it if you don’t write code. The models behind it are — if something else is the front end.

OpenRouter is a gateway. One key, hundreds of models, pay per run, fallbacks when a lab is down. That is a gift to people shipping agents. It is a chore to people shipping campaigns. The reported Stripe deal does not change that split. It makes the gateway more important for apps, not easier for designers.

When OpenRouter itself is worth it

• You are building a product that calls models.
• You already think in API keys and usage dashboards.
• You want one bill across labs, including cheaper models that only exist as endpoints.

If that is you, stay on OpenRouter. Use Pantr or don’t. The key still works as a key.

When the gateway is the wrong product

• You think in frames, not in JSON.
• You need to see ten variants next to the references.
• You want to switch Flux and Gemini on the same prompt without opening a second website.
• You do not want to learn `input_references` to do what `@ref` should do.

If your output is code or an agent, OpenRouter is the product. If your output is a still or a clip, OpenRouter is infrastructure. Use it through a visual tool — ours or someone else’s — and ignore the rest of the 400-model list until a brief needs it.
