OpenRouter Image API Explained for Non-Developers
August 17, 2026 - Updated August 17, 2026 - 7 min read - By Pantr AI Team

OpenRouter shipped a unified image API: one base URL, one key, many image models, parameters normalized so an app can switch labs without rewriting the client. Their docs assume you POST JSON. This page assumes you don’t.
If you make pictures, you do not need to call `/api/v1/images`. You need to know what the API *is*, so the no-code key workflow makes sense — and so the Stripe news sounds like infrastructure, not a new Midjourney.
What the image API is
A single door. You (or an app) send a model, a prompt, optional aspect ratio, resolution, and reference images. You get image bytes back. Failed generations are not supposed to bill. OpenRouter does not add a cute second currency. That is the whole trick.
They also have a path to *read* images (vision) on a different endpoint. Generation and understanding are not the same button. You can ignore that until you build an app.
What “unified” buys you
Labs disagree about names: some say `aspect_ratio`, some say size presets, some say steps. The image API’s job is to make the common knobs one shape, and let weird knobs pass through for people who care. Developers A/B Flux and GPT Image by changing a string. You A/B them by changing the model on a canvas.
Catalog reality: OpenRouter lists many image models. Pantr lists a curated subset (Flux, Gemini, GPT Image, Seedream, Recraft, and video rows). We are not the API, and we are not the full list. Map: best OpenRouter image models 2026.
What you can skip
- Base64. Drop the file on the board; we send it as an input reference.
- Provider routing objects. Pick a model, or Auto.
- Streaming partial previews unless you are building a product. The placeholder tiles on the canvas are your preview.

How Pantr sits on it
Prompt bar → our edge function → OpenRouter image (or video) call → image on the board. Wallet users pay API price (10% on top-up only). Key users pay OpenRouter. Same canvas. That is OpenRouter for creatives in one sentence.
If you already have a key, pantr.ai/openrouter. If you don’t, start at €1.00. Either way, you can leave the JSON to the server.
