Flux vs Nano Banana vs GPT Image: When to Switch Models on the Same Brief

Most “Flux vs Midjourney vs ChatGPT” posts pretend you have to marry one model. You don’t. The brief stays. The model is a lens. This is a switching guide for one campaign, not a loyalty program.

On Pantr those three sit in the same picker, billed at each model’s API price (or your OpenRouter key). Change model reruns the saved prompt on the others so you can see them on the board. That is the creative version of what OpenRouter does in code — the idea behind OpenRouter for creatives.

The 15-second map

Reach forWhen the brief isWatch-outs
Flux.2 ProPhotoreal stills, product, fashion, “this could be a campaign photo”Weaker at dense layout and tiny type; reference cap is lower than Gemini
Nano Banana 2 / ProEdits, many references, “change this, keep that,” boards with 8+ stillsCan feel more “model” than “photograph” if you wanted raw Flux realism
GPT ImageType, UI, packaging faces, slides, anything where letters have to holdNot always the prettiest photograph; use it when structure matters more than skin

If you do not want to pick, Auto reads the prompt and how many images you attached. Photoreal stills tend to Flux. Illustration to Seedream. Edits and high-ref work to Nano Banana. Text-heavy prompts to Gemini / Nano Banana.

Same brief, three jobs

Say the client wants a summer sneaker campaign: hero still, lifestyle crop, and a poster with the name of the drop.

Flux for the hero

Generate the photoreal hero on Flux.2 Pro. Light, material, and “could this run in a lookbook” are the reasons it exists in the catalog. Put the product ref on the canvas and `@mention` it. Flux.2 Pro takes up to 8 input references. If you dump a whole moodboard, switch models or cut refs — Pantr will not silently drop them.

Nano Banana for the edit

When the hero is 80% right — wrong bag, wrong sky, wrong hand — stay on the same still and switch to Nano Banana 2. Gemini’s image models are the ones we pin for inpaint anyway. They take up to 14 refs, which is the difference between “one product shot” and “keep the campaign grid consistent.”

GPT Image for the poster

When type has to survive, switch again. GPT Image (including GPT Image 2 in the catalog) is the one to try for lockups, packaging, and “put the words on the thing.” Generate beside the Flux hero so the art director can reject the pretty photo that cannot spell.

You now have three outputs from one brief on one board. That is the workflow chat tools break. See keep creative context when you switch models.

How to switch without retyping

Generate once. Right-click (or the item menu) → Change model. Select the other catalog rows of the same type. Pantr shows the total API price, then runs one generation per model with the saved prompt and refs. New stills tile to the right. Deselect what you don’t want. Download what you do.

That is also how you A/B test models like a designer instead of like a backend team.

What not to do

  • Do not pick a winner for the whole year. Pick a winner for the frame.
  • Do not send 14 refs to Flux and wonder why it failed. The toast is telling you the cap.
  • Do not use a first-frame video model when you meant an image edit. Video Auto and image Auto are separate on purpose. Video comparison: Sora, Veo, Kling, Seedance.

Related models worth a fourth tile

Seedream 4.5 is the illustration / anime fork when Flux goes too photographic — and the model Pantr uses for 2K/4K export. Recraft is the “I need a graphic, not a photo” fork. They belong in best OpenRouter image models 2026, not in a three-way that is already too long.

Start with €1.00, or paste a key. Run one prompt three ways. Keep the one that matches the frame, not the brand of the lab.
