What Pay-Per-Token Means If You Make Ads, Not Agents

Coverage of Stripe and OpenRouter keeps saying tokens. If you make ads, that word means nothing. Translation: you pay per run, at a published model price, not a monthly subscription.

That is why a payments company reportedly buying OpenRouter makes sense. Stripe meters usage. OpenRouter already does that across labs. Creatives have been paying the other way: seats, packs, credits that expire. The deal is a billing story wearing an AI headline.

Token, in plain language

For language models, a token is a slice of text. For images and video you usually pay per image, per megapixel, or per second. OpenRouter’s job is to show that price in one place. You should see it before you generate. If you cannot, you are buying a credit pack that hides the real cost.

Why fake credits exist
